How many Americans are struggling with a health issue?

Updated: Aug 16, 2024

As of September 2021, chronic health conditions were highly prevalent in the United States. It is important to note that the prevalence of chronic health conditions may have changed over time, so it's recommended to consult the latest statistics or reports for the most up-to-date information.

However, based on data available up to that point, it was estimated that approximately half of all American adults (around 117 million individuals) had at least one chronic health condition. Common chronic conditions included:

  1. Hypertension (High Blood Pressure): A significant percentage of adults in the U.S. had high blood pressure, which is a leading cause of heart disease and stroke.

  2. Diabetes: Both type 1 and type 2 diabetes affected millions of Americans, with type 2 diabetes being more common.

  3. Obesity: Obesity was prevalent and often linked to other chronic conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, orthopedic problems and certain types of cancer.

  4. Heart Disease: Coronary artery disease, heart failure, and other cardiovascular conditions were widespread.

  5. Arthritis: Arthritis, including osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis, affected a substantial portion of the population.

  6. Chronic Respiratory Conditions: Conditions like asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) were common.

  7. Mental Health Conditions: Mental health conditions, including depression and anxiety disorders, also contributed to the burden of chronic illnesses.

In addition, around 88 million adults in the United States have prediabetes. Prediabetes is a condition in which blood sugar levels are higher than normal but not yet high enough to be diagnosed as type 2 diabetes. It is a significant health concern because individuals with prediabetes are at an increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and other health complications if they do not make lifestyle changes to improve their blood sugar control.

Most of us have been there – doctor visits, medications, and the constant struggle with health issues. It feels like a never-ending journey. When you realize this approach is addressing symptoms, it makes sense that you are locked into a cycle of office visit, pharmacy, labs, rinse and repeat. Many people feel powerless in this relationship, as they're told what to take and when to come back to the office, usually without being educated on what they can do to improve their situation, other than 'keep taking your medication, keep up with the lab work, and keep coming back to the office for your next appointment.'

What if there's a better way? Instead of just addressing symptoms, a holistic health coach digs deeper to identify the root causes of your health challenges and works closely with you to uncover lifestyle and nutrition factors that could be contributing to your health issues. And by addressing these root causes, you can make lasting changes that not only lead to better health but also significant cost savings. We can help you realize that you can have control over your health. You deserve to reclaim your health and life. Let us show you how. Book a free Blood Sugar Consult call today!
